Some may join a different course, or some may join college again after a few years. While parents do save money to send their children to college, there are so many occasions on which the savings may not suffice. Especially with the rising costs of education, this remains a worry among parents and students.

What Are the College Funding Options Available?

Kids from affluent families don’t face issues with funding. They have to only focus on meeting the program requirements. Whereas, for many students from low-income families, who wish to take up programs from domains such as STEM, they can hit a roadblock. Something to ponder!

scholarships available for students

In the United States, there are multiple grants and scholarships available for students who are financially challenged. Working part-time won’t help students in premier programs pay their tuition fees in addition to their parents’ contribution. Federal and state grants are the best options available.

Types of Grants:

Grants with the most significant funding are provided mainly by the federal government based on needs or merit. The most famous federal grant in the US is the Pell grant. Other merit-based grants for STEM courses are given to existing Pell grant recipients. The amount granted could be up to a maximum of $5500.

Need-based grants to take the students and their family conditions into the picture before paying out. It is given out on the basis on who needs the grant the most. It doesn’t have to be repaid. Merit-based grants mostly support STEM category program students who are academically excellent but not financially well-off. Supplementary grants such as FSEOG supplement the grants and scholarships that a student receives.

Many other federal grants involve a service clause in exchange for a grant. These are mainly in highly demanding fields such as nursing, teaching, children of military personnel who died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. Students should undertake that; they would serve in an underserved area for a fixed time period after graduating.

With so many grant options around and dedicated websites that help you apply for these, you can throw away your college funding worries.
