Buying a second-hand smartphone is worth giving a thought. It is an easy way to get your hands on your favorite smartphones at a price much lower than the original. However, with a handful of brands that launch a new smartphone every other day with enhanced specifications, it becomes perplexing whether to buy a second-hand smartphone or to go for a brand new cheaper alternative.

Over a decade ago, used smartphones were sold on e-commerce marketplaces like eBay. However, buyers found it challenging to know the quality of the gadget they were spending on. Even though these smartphones could have a fair share of wear and tear, they often did not come strong with a warranty cover.

The craze of buying a second-hand smartphone is still on, despite the new and cheaper product releases. Around 137 million second-hand smartphones were sold last year in Europe and the US.

So, why do people prefer to buy a second-hand smartphone instead of going for a cheaper, brand-new alternative? The answer lies in the high discount on the so-called used, flagship phones from Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

These top-notch devices, if bought brand new, can burn a hole in your pocket. Apples‘ smartphones can cost you a whopping €1000. However, over the past few years, the market of mid-range smartphones have exploded, with the cheaper smartphones performing nearly equal or sometimes better than the devices that cost twice or thrice that much.

The reason in general to buy a second-hand smartphone would be because you want a particular feature, design or style. To decide whether to buy a second smartphone or not, the best way would be to think of several deal-breakers.

If you are a shutterbug and love taking photos, and your budget is tight, you surely can’t afford Huawei P30 Pro or the Google Pixel 3XL. In that case, going for a used smartphone would be the best alternative. However, if you don’t have any specific features in your mind, buying a brand new smartphone would be a better deal.

However, before you decide whether to buy a used smartphone or not, it is substantial to know its limitations. Used smartphones often do not come with a warranty cover. Moreover, they won’t appear or give you the feel of holding a new smartphone—they might have Knicks or cosmetic blemishes. Some of them often come with missing accessories. Nonetheless, if you desperately want a specific feature, the best way to get it in your budget would be to buy it used.
